There are a few books that cover scenic South African routes, but few are as detailed as Passes & Poorts, by Getaway assistant editor Marion Whitehead. The guide covers the most scenic routes of the Western Cape, such as the Cederberg passes and Bain’s Kloof, Tradouw, Garcia and Gysmanshoek passes. Some follow ancient migration routes or are engineering masterpieces, but all are spectacular. Marion also includes handy tips on best driving routes, what you’ll see, hiking trails, mountain-biking tracks and 4×4 routes. The beautiful photography, by current and previous Getaway staffers, completes this must-have guide.

  1. Hello Marion. My name is Glen Moult and I was living in the Southern Cape area for some time. While there we went through the Prince Alfred pass several times between 2008/2011 as we loved the trip very much.
So much so, that my children bought me your book and while going through it, I was astounded when I got to page 146, and saw the picture on the bottom left of the page. That spot is the exact place where I parked my Silver Chevrolet Captiva while we went for a walk to the waterfall. I am convinced that this is my vehicle.
Could I ask that this photo be sent to me electronically so that I can confirm this?
I am prepared to pay for it if there is any cost involved.
    My e mail : Glen.Moult@afrox.linde.com
I would really appreciate it. Thanks for a great book!

    • Hi Glen, I have to agree it’s the perfect spot to stop in this magical pass – which is why I parked there in my borrowed silver Chevy Captiva and sprinted back up the road to take the pic. So sorry, no it wasn’t yours! I did, however, meet some Getaway readers at the top of the Spitskop view point and we watched a storm approaching before jumping back into our vehicles. I hope you’re inspired to travel some more of the passes featured in Passes & Poorts.
      all the best
      Marion
